The J Reid Trophy was originally for the winner of the Junior Grade. Donated in the 1960ties by the then New Zealand captain John Reid, who was playing for the Oamaru Cricket Club at the time. Over the years it gradually changed from being the winner of the Junior Grade to the winner of Third Grade. As the years passed and the introduction of the Senior Reserve grade in the late 70ties, this grade moved towards having more of a focus on the local high schools and less club teams. With the lower level of grade for this trophy there has been quite a number of clubs that have won trophy, with Union being one of them.
