Two from Two

By Scott Cameron on Sunday, 7 October 2018

The Union Senior team made a perfect start on the opening day of the new NOCA cricket season with wins over Oamaru and Albion yesterday.

After batting first in the opening game, the Union innings was dominated by a typically aggressive innings from Matt Lilley. In his innings of 86, he cleared the boundary 5 times and notched up 12 boundries. He was well supported by Blake Martin (34) as the pair put on 116 for the 5th wicket. Earlier in the innings Jermiah Shields made 16. For Oamaru, Reece Curle took 2-10 in 3 very economical overs.

In its chase Oamaru struggled and only made 2 runs more than Lilley had earlier in the match. Mahajan (26), Johnston (14) and Bartlett (24) all made double figures but their team stuggled to gain momentum. For Union, Fleming (3-18) and Cameron (3-5) took three wickets each.

Captain Fleming, like the earlier game, won the toss against Albion and elected to bat. This time the innings wasn't dominated by one player but a number of players made contributions with the bat. Bastin (27) was the anchor of the innings early on, while Lilley (15), Blake Martin (11), Fleming (21) and James (22*) all reached double figures helping their side to 138 in their 20 overs. For Albion Ewing (2-17), Whyte (3-21) and Stockbridge (2-37) all took two wickets each.

Despite 44 from Stockbridge, 16 from Naylor and some lusty hitting from Roulston late in the innings, Albion fell short of the required target by 27 runs. Sam Bastin backed up his batting, the only bowler to take wickets or more, with 2-22 of 4 overs.

The senior team will play Valley next weekend, with both teams undefeated after the first day of NOCA senior cricket.
