Win and Loss in opening day's cricket

By on Monday, 10 October 2016

The Union Senior team had a win and a loss in the opening weekend of North Otago cricket. All four teams wore black armbands and had a moment of silence at the start of the in remembrance of Andrew Grubb who passed away recently.

Albion won the toss and elected to bat in the first game with the Union bowlers managing to restrict them to 116 in their 20 overs. Veteran Dylan Winter was the top scorer for the innings with 38, while openers Jacob Naylor (20) and Jeremy Smith (19) made good contributions at the top of the order. Matt Lilley (2-19), Brad Fleming (2-18), Blake James (2-10) and Hayden Creedy (2-33) all took two wickets each during Albion's innings.

Union started well in its chase with Duncan Drew (23) and Dylan Edwards (14) putting on 45 for the opening wicket. However, with the wicket of Edwards, this started a collapse that saw 10 wickets fall for the addition of only 37 runs. Matt Day was the chief destroyer of the innings taking 6-14 while Naylor took 2-10 of his two overs. A win to Albion by 34 runs.

In the second game of the day Union took on Valley, with Union batting first after winning the toss. Once again they were served well by their openers, this time Drew and Edwards putting on 54 for the opening wicket. When Edwards was dismissed for 27, Union did not collapse like the earlier game with Englishman Sam Bastin (39 not out), Sean Conlan (14) and then Cameron (11 not out) helping their side to 147-4 after 20 overs. Cameron hitting the last ball of the innings for a six. Francois Mostert, who will be a key player once again for the North Otago Hawke Cup side, was the pick of the bowlers taking 2-9 of his four overs.

Union was on top early during the Valley innings, but Mostert and Whitham then combined for a key partnership and taking them close to victory. It took some tight bowling at the end of the innings to help Union to victory with Sam Bastin only going for 4 runs in the 19th that effectively confirmed victory.

Union Seniors will now go on to play Albion this week at Centennial Park. It will make an important milestone for two players, Cameron will be playing his 300th senior game for the club while Dan Conlan will playing his capping game bringing up 100 games.
