By Scott Cameron on Sunday, 28 October 2018

The Union senior team continued its perfect start to the season with a 59 run victory over Waitaki Boys at King George Park.

Union got of to a great start with the top five of the batting order all making double figures. Jeremiah Shields (18), Sam Bastin (86), Duncan Drew (22), Blake James (13) and Sean Conlan (30) all made sure that their team would set a very competetive total for the school boys to chase. Waitaki Boys weren't helped in their efforts conceding 41 extras, and at the completion of the innings were set 229 for victory in their 50 overs. Bowling wise Mason James took 3-53 while Stirling took 2-27.

Union started well with Matt Lilley and James taking wickets in the first two overs of the innings. The always dangerous Francos Mostert was in belligerent form punishing any wayward bowling, his innings containing 9 boundaries. He was well supported by Scott Kitto, as the pair put on 45 for their partnership, before the loss of Mostert for 53. James and McClea then looked to bring their side back into the game but with the loss of James with the score at 140, Waitaki lost their last four wickets for 29 runs. McClea was left stranded with his score on 30. Bastin backed up his previous batting efforts taking the key wickets of Mostert and James finishing with 4-36 of 10 overs. Blake James (2-30) and Lilley (2-39) were the other bowlers to take two wickets or more.
