For the first time in a number of years the Union Cricket Club senior team has finished Borton Cup league play undefeated but it was almost not to be.

After winning the toss and electing to bat Union got of to a good start with the Shields twins putting on 60 runs for the opening wicket on a pitch that was difficult to bat on at times. However a collapse saw the team lose 6 wickets for the addition of only 47 runs as Harry Semple ripped through the top order, leaving Union 107-6 in the 27th over. Blake James and Brad Fleming then put on 73 for the 7th wicket that put control of the game back into their teams hands. Fleming was the first go making 33 while James fell 8 runs later with a well compiled 42. The home team all out for 214 in the final over of the innings. Semple was the pick of the bowlers finishing with 5-24 of his 10 overs while Rodney van Leewen took 2-20 of his 6.5 overs.

Glenvay started very slowly scoring at rate of less than 2 an over for the first 13 overs before van Leewen start to take to the Union bowlers. He scored 36 runs, with 3 sixes and 3 fours which started to shift the momenteum to Glenavy. Caught by keeper Drew of the bowling of Jordy Whyte, his partner Semple continued to put the presure on as the next batsmen batted around him. Moving his side close to a winning position, Semple was caught in the 47th over by Dan Martin of the bowling of Brad Fleming. It was left to McRae to finish of the match but Martin was then bought on to bowl and in three very tight overs went for 11 runs, inculding a maiden, as well as taking the wicket of Graham. Glenavy falling 5 runs short of a memorable victory.

Seniors as the top qualifer for the Borton Cup Semi-Finals have won the David Sewell Shield as Minor Premier but will be aiming to win their semi this coming weekend against Valley at KGP.
