Raised in Te Anau, he brought many interesting country attitudes to Oamaru which fortunately were quickly knocked out of him. He progressed from a young all rounder into a determined leader and captained Union to the Borton Cup in 1991-1992.

Mike was an astute tactician, and contributed with some devastating medium pace spells along with his recognised resolute middle order batting. He represented North Otago in both cricket and rugby, before career opportunities meant his departure from the region.
