Union came within 2 runs of an improbable and memorable victory on Saturday at King George Park.

Missing 7 players due to representative duty and unavailability Union was of to a bad start in their batting losing opener Robert Coates (8) and Peter Rudduck (0) with the score at 26. Jason Hasler (48) and Paul Johnston (48) then combined for a 84 run partnership but lost both batsmen in fairly quick order with Johnston out with the score on 110, and then Hasler on 113. Still needing 71, Tony Moore then hit out scoring 35 including 5 fours and 1 six but was run out going for a second run with the score on 182, leaving Union with 3 runs to get of the last 3 balls. But it proved to much for the lower order losing a wicket on the last ball going for the score equalling run.

Earlier Waitaki had made a total of 183 of 42.3 over's in driving rain. For Waitaki T Townend (52), Josh Hastie (45), and Scott Simpson (32 not out) all made good contributions to their teams total. Peter Rudduck for Union was the chief wicket taker for Union taking 3-28, while other bowlers Tony Moore (2-57) and Paul Johnston (2-90) took the other wickets. The game was reduced to a 42.3 over's after constant rain.
