The Union Senior team will finish the season on top of the table and play in the Borton Cup final after a low scoring 4 wicket win against Valley at Weston Park.
Union captain Paul Johnston won the toss and elected to field on a soft pitch and extremely long outfield after heavy rain in the past couple of weeks. Only opener Scott Kingan looked like surviving as the Valley batsmen failed on low bouncing pitch. Kingan was the top scoring of the innings carrying his bat with 16 not out, Valley all out for 63. Glynn Cameron took the final four wickets - all bowled - for figures of 4-11 of 6.3 over's at one stage sitting on a hat-trick. Captain Paul Johnston was economical as he finished with 2-4 of 9 over's with 6 maidens, while opening bowler Phil Crossan took 2-15 of 8 over's.
Union started badly in its chase losing opener Ants Cromwell for 1 with the score at 3, and then Thomas Shields falling with the score on 28. Union looked ideally placed at 2-44 but lost quick wickets to be 6-53. Todd Sidon and Paul Johnston then took Union through to required target of 64, a win by 4 wickets.
With the win and Oamaru's loss against Albion, they will now finish the league portion of the competition as top qualified and go directly through to the final.
