Match at Palmerston
Monday, 23 December 1929

The Union Club visited Palmerston on Saturday, where they played the Waihemo team. Owning to the proximity of the Christmas holidays neither side was at full strength, the Waihemo team being much handicapped by the absence of four of their usual players. Union took the field first and dismissed their opponents for 30 runs, the home side making the mistake of frequently playing back.

Union apart from J. and H. Robertson did not fare any better, the fast wicket and the leg breaks of Buttar having the side in difficulties. In their second strike Waihemo lost three wickets for 76 and declared, W. Higgins, the former Otago representative player, showed some of his old form compiling 49 runs, many of which were made from a powerful hook shot off rising balls. He also gave a splendid exhibition as wicketkeeper. Union had on 42 runs at the call of time.

The town team was very hospitably entertained by the country men.

Waihemo XI 30 ( Dang 11, C. Meikle 4-4, J. Maddigan 2-5, W. Tonkin 2-10 ) & 76-3dec ( Higgins 49 )
