There will be a new trophy to play for in the first game of the new season as the Union Senior team have been awarded the new challenge trophy for the NOCA Senior Competition.

The new trophy is named after two people Union players and supporters will be well acquainted with as it is named after life members Russell Payne and Ted Tempero. Following rugby's Ranfurly Shield rules, the new Payne Tempero Challenge matches will take place at the holders home ground during the regular season of the Borton Cup. The last time the Union Cricket Club held a trophy using a similar format was the Dick Hunt Rosebowl when it was a challenge trophy in 1980-81.
