In its first defence of the Payne Tempero Cup, the Union Senior team beat Waitaki Boys by 3 wickets at King George Park
Winning the toss and electing to field first Waitaki Boys notched up 226 of their 50 over's. Sean Eathorne was the main contributor of the innings scoring the first North Otago senior competition century with his 110. For Union Dan Conlan took 2-43 of his 9 over's, Chris Ware took 2-43 of ten over's and Duncan Drew took 2-12 of 7 very economical over's.
The main highlights of the successful run chase came from opener Mitchell Clarke who was punishing on the bat ball scoring 63 runs including 10 boundaries. After the dismissal of Clarke with the score at 108-2, Duncan Drew looked to anchor the innings as the incoming batsmen batted around him. This season Union has a team that can bat right through the order as this game was to prove with a number of handy contributions from Chris Ware (20) and Daniel Conlan (16 not out). It was Drew and Conlan at the crease when the required total was reached, Drew top scoring with 66 not out.
