The Union Senior Reserve team in an exciting final beat Valley on the last ball by one wicket at Weston Park yesterday.
Batting first Valley made 184 with ex North Otago Hawke Cup cricketer Kelvin Mansfield top scoring with 91. Valley made 184 in its innings.
Union started badly in its chase and with more than 20 runs required lost its 9th wicket. Ryan Whitburn was joined at the crease by youngster Mason James, and this signalled Whitburn to unleash. In some big hitting action, Whitburn ably supported by James, single handily bought his team to victory. Needing 10 runs of the final three balls, Whitburn hit a double, then a six and finally ran for two byes. Whitburn finished with 78 not out.
This is Unions first Senior Reserve Championship since 2003.
