The match between Union and Oamaru A was finished on Saturday, Union securing an innings win. They had made 350 on the first day and Oamaru had lost three wickets cheaply, a bad start from which they never recovered, for the side was all out for 46. Not one of them looked comfortable to the bowling of Maddigan and Doig, and Beattie was the only one to reach double figures. Maddigan, making use of the wind, was making the ball go both ways, and his length permitted no liberties. He secured five victims at a cost of four apiece, and Doig dismissed three others for 20 runs, That the strength of the attack was not responsible for Oamaru's failure demonstrated in the second innings, when the batsmen gave the same bowling a thoroughly good trouncing, almost every one of them showing something of the form that might be expected of them. L. Watson, was promoted to opening, played a number of excelled square cuts in his 24. Beattie was out to a good catch at deep third man by Reid, when 13. Cahill was run out because he failed to back up. Then Robertson and Kelk played interesting cricket. The former started with a perfect knock of Doig, followed by a sweet late cut, and his innings was throughout a polished display until at 47 he hit a full toss on the off into the hands of Maddigan at point. Kelk went on to bat freely for 33, at which stage he hit Borrows to Doig at cover. He was missed several times, but he played a number of sizzling drives and his strike was entertaining. J. Watson looked likely to get runs but he hit an off ball back hard and high to Reid, who made a good catch. Wilson (29) and Miller (20) scored rapidly for the last wicket and brought the total to one behind Union's score. M. Dick was absent and Union did not require to bat again, though faulty addition made it apparent that the scores were even and the wickets were replaced to allow Tonkin to make the runs required for the win.
