The Union senior team finished fourth in the Wild Buck T20 knockout competition after losing to Albion and Valley on Saturday.
In the first game Albion notched up 138/7 in their 20 overs after Ian Cooney got them of to a fast start, and good contributions from Jeremy Smith and Marshall Smith. For Union Glynn Cameron was the best of the bowlers taking 3-17 of four overs while Brad Fleming took 2-26 of his four.
Union got of to a good start with Jake Greenslade and Duncan Drew putting on 50 for the opening wicket before Greenslade was caught for 25. Drew then combined with captain Jeremiah Shields (15) for 41, before Drew was out caught for 53. The batsmen then struggled to get the required as the run rate started to escalate. Stephan Grobler then game out and scored his 22 runs quickly, but after the completion of 20 overs, Union were 4 runs short of victory. Ian Cooney, backing up his earlier batting efforts, took 3-19 taking 2 wickets in the final over of the innings
With the loss Union then played Valley in the 3rd/4th playoff on one of the artificial wickets on Don Field. With a lighting quick outfield due to the almost drought conditions the district is currently suffering, the ball flew of the bat as Valley scored runs at a quick rate. It only took them 4 overs to bring up 50 runs, and the 100 came up 5 overs later as a 220+ score looked to be on the cards. Some good bowling in the middle order slowed the run-rate but when the 20 overs were completed Valley had still totalled an impressive 195/6, with Tom Squire (60) and Francis Mostert (51) both scored half-centuries, while Llew Johnson (38) and Hayden Tisdall (22) both made good contributions. For Union Brad Fleming returned 2-29 in his four overs and Stephan Grobler took 2-22 in his four overs.
Union struggled to keep up with the required rate but still were scoring at over 7 an over. Greenslade (21), Grober (47), Dylan Edwards (41*) and Shields (24) all made good contributions to their team, but when the 20 overs were bowled Union were still 33 runs short of victory. For Valley Hamish McKenzie took 2-34 and Josh Hayward 2-21.
