For the first time at home since November 2011 and after a record breaking 12 successful defences of the Payne Tempero Cup the Union senior team lost a Borton Cup fixture at King George Park.
After losing the toss and being put into the field opening bowler Glynn Cameron ripped through the Valley batting order, taking the first five wickets to leave the 5-41 in the 15th over. Valley then continued to loss wickets at a constant rate, being 8-72 at one stage and in danger of being dismissed for less than 100. Shaun Todd joined Neil Gilbert at the crease and the game started to turn with Todd playing himself in then starting to hit back, launching himself with a series of boundaries and bring up his half century in under 40 balls. When he was dismissed by Paul Johnston he had notched up 58 including 6 fours and 3 sixes and put on 83 for the eight wicket with Gilbert. Craig Direen followed shortly after, Valley all out for 156, Gilbert not out with 36. For Union Cameron finished with 5-24m hit fourth five wicket bag in senior cricket, and Matt Lilley took 2-24.
Union’s chase started badly however Duncan Drew and Thomas Shields had brought them back into the game before the loss of Drew for 21 with the score on 70. Of the remaining Union batsman only Dan Conlan reached double figures as with heavy rain falling and accurate bowling from Valley saw the runs difficult to come by. With the pressure mounting wickets fell at a constant rate and when the final wicket fell Union were 25 runs short of victory. Conlan was not out with 23 at the completion of the innings while for Valley Francis Mostert in a firey spell took 3-19 and Craig Direen 4-27. Shaun Todd backed up his deeds with the bat taking 2-33 of 7 overs.
