The Union senior team has completed the t20 phase of the Dick Hunt Rosebowl Holiday Competition undefeated after a tight win against Oamaru and a victory against Eastern yesterday.
In the first game it came down the final over of Union's innings after they were set 147 for victory by Oamaru. Ben Cant and James Mallinson got their side of to a great start putting on 71 before the loss of Cant for 25. Looking to pile on the runs Oamaru put on 75 in the last 8 overs but in light of the first innings partnership was less than what they would have hopped. The last few overs were guided by Regan George who top scored for the innings with 39, Oamaru 146/5 at the compeletion of 20 overs.
Glynn Cameron looked to get his side of to a fast start, and along with Jake Greenslade combined for a 53 run partnership before the loss of Cameron for 42 going for a third six of consective balls. Union lost two further wickets quickly before Duncan Drew (26) and Jeremiah Shields put on 40 for the fourth wicket. Sean Conlan and Shields then kept Union in the game with 28 runs to move their team to 135 in the 18th over before the loss of Conlan for five. With four runs required in the last over for victory, of Englishman Ed Hall, the first two balls were dot balls while the third was hit by Paul Johnston for four giving his side a 5 wicket victory. Shields was their when the target was reached, contributing 36 runs, while Regan George for Oamaru took 2-28.
In the second fixture for the day Union took on Eastern who were put into bat after Union won the toss. Early on it was a struggle for them to put runs on the board as they struggled to 42/3 in the 10th over. After 10 further overs they had 109 on baord thanks mainly to Ben Williams who top scored with 58 not out. For Union Brad Fleming after three overs had the figures of 1 wicket for 0 runs, with three maidens finished with 2-5 of four, while Matt Lilley took 2-25 of his four.
Union never really struggled in its chase with Sean Conlan and Dylan Edwards putting on 46 for the first wicket. After the loss of Edwards for 21, Drew joined Conlan as they put on an undefeated 64 for the second wicket. Conlan notched up the highest score for his team for the day with 66 not out while Drew finished with 13 not out. Union making it 2 from 2 and overall 4 wins without any losses in t20 round robin play in the Dick Hunt.
