The Union senior team, defending its 20/20 championship from last season, were outplayed in the final of the Tui 20/20 for 2013 by Albion and lost by 10 runs.
Earlier Union had drawn Oamaru and after winning the toss sent them into bat on the back field. Oamaru batted their 20 overs notching up 97-8. Chris Ware marked his return to Union colours taking 1-9 in 4 very economical overs. The main wicketaker though was Riley Rooney taking 4-18 of his four overs. Others to take two wickets or more were Glynn Cameron (2-26) and Philip Crossan (2-23).
Jeremiah Shields got his side of to a good starting top scoring for the innings with 21 and as Union got the required total in the 19th over.
Once again winning the toss and electing to field, Union had Albion in early trouble at 26-2 in the 6th over and then 4-43 in the 10th before a match turning partnership of 48 between Brad Kernahan and Stephen Halliwell added some runs in the middle order. Union came back and restricted Albion to scoring 19 in the final 6 overs, Albion 110-7 at the completion of its 20 overs. Bowling for Union Matt Lilly took 3-15 and Glynn Cameron 3-18.
Union got to the worst possible start losing all of its top four batsmen before 20 runs were on the board as the Albion bowlers started making in-roads into the Union batsmen. Thomas Shields and Jake Greenslade combined to steady the innings however found scoring at the required rate with boundaries drying up and struggling to rotate the strike. It was only when Chris Ware entered the innings that boundaries started to be scored and giving his side a chance of pulling of a big comeback victory. Twenty six runs were needed of 12 balls but Scott Guyton bowled the 19th over conceding only 4 runs that effectively gave his side the win. Union ended up at 100-6 of its 20 overs, 11 runs short of victory.
