The Union Senior team's first Payne Tempero defence for season 2013-14 was abandoned yesterday after a heavy thunderstorm soaked the ground.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Union got of a good start with openers Glynn Cameron and Jeremiah Shields putting on 38 before the loss of Shields of the bowling of Blair Malcolm for 22. Duncan Drew and Glynn Cameron then put on 28 for the second wicket before Cameron was caught by Valley captain Hamish McKenzie for 24. It was at this stage of the match when the heavy rain that had been threating since the start of the match started to fall. Play was stopped for 20 mins and the match was reduced to a 46 over affair. Not long after the recommencement of play Union captain Thomas Shields was caught in a sharp stumping by Stan Mansfield for 2 of the bowling of Geoff Mavor. Sean Conlan and Duncan Drew then combined for a 47 run 4th wicket partnership before Conlan was caught by Stan Mansfield for 29. Union then lost the wickets of Paul Johnston and Neville Donaldson in quick succession before Brad Fleming joined Drew at the crease. With thunderstorms approaching Drew reached his fifty with a six before more heavy rain started to fall again. With the outfield already soaked due to overnight rain and then the showers earlier in the innings the thunderstorm was enough to see the game abandoned without any further play. With the other senior fixture, also played at WBHS, also abandoned it sees all teams share 5 points each.
