Union v. Oamaru

Fred W Ongley
Fred W Ongley

The Oamaru and Union Clubs met for the first time yesterday afternoon. The matting wicket played well enough, but the environments might be improved with very little trouble. Union batted first and their efforts realised only 27, Mitchell, with five wickets for six runs, proving particularly destructive, King, who made 11, being the only batsman to make a prolonged stay at the wickets. The Oamaru players, thanks largely to a well-made contribution of 21 by Borton, 12 by Jones, and 10 from Hambley, totted up 61, Ongley with seven wickets for 22 obtaining most of their wickets. Union went in again for a second strike and made 96, of which Ongley got 25, McKenzie 18, Bain 14, King 10, Montgomery 10, and Stagpole 10.
