Union Cricket Club
Jack 'The Turk' Maddigan is one of the legends of the Union Cricket club. In a career spanning three decades he took over 500 wickets and scored over 3000 runs. His 193 matches would have been well over 200 matches had Union not failed to field a senior side in the mid 1920ties and World War 2 from 1939-45 saw the cancellation of local cricket. A fierce competitor, players later in his career remarked how amazed they were how far he could swing the ball of a two or three step run up. Won the Borton Cup as Senior captain at least once, winning it in 1930-31. Member of the first Easter Tour team in 1928 and then took part in at least 30 of the tours as a player. Jack retired at the end of the 1959 season 36 years after making his debut for Union as a youngster in 1923. Amongst records he holds he has taken the most career Senior wickets and has played the third most number of games. Awarded life membership in 1957. North Otago Representative. |
