Seniors finish with win

By Scott Cameron on Wednesday, 25 January 2017

The Union Senior team finished the Dick Hunt competition with a 68 run victory over last placed Oamaru in the weekend.

The game was effectively a dead rubber as both Albion and Valley had qualified for the final. The Union team was severely depleted with more than half the side unavailable due to rep and other commitments but still managed a win over Oamaru after the top order fired with the bat in the first innings

Glynn Cameron (39) and Sean Conlan (17) got their side of to a good steady start putting on 46 for the first wicket before Conlan was caught of the bowling of Robertson. Partnerships were the order of the day with Cameron and Dylan Edwards then putting on 25 before the fall of the next wicket. Edwards then put on a further 65 runs before he was caught, just short of a half-century, for 46. Conlan was then out quickly after but Paul Johnston and Daniel Martin then combined for an unbroken 81 runs to see out the 50 overs. Union's total was 221 at the end of the 50 with a rare occurrence being no maiden overs during the innings. For Oamaru, Robbie Breen took 2-25.

Chasing the 222 required for victory Oamaru had some partnerships that looked like they might take the game away from the hosts but lost key wickets at important times. Matt Murphy top scored with 24, while Matt Murphy (20), Robertson (20), Gilmore (21) and James Mallinson (18) made good contributions. For Union Dan Conlan took 3-31, Hayden Creedy 2-45 and Glynn Cameron 2-34, while Blake Martin bowled well more than his 1-15 figures shows.
